Cape Town enjoys celebrating to welcome the New Year in South Africa
1 January, New Year’s Day in South Africa, as the first day of the year is traditionally the time of year when people have time to reflect on the year that has passed and think about the year ahead, and maybe make (and even keep) a resolution or two.
Capetonians often spend this public holiday in nature or watching a concert or simply nursing a hangover from their New Years Eve celebrations.
In Cape Town the New Year Celebration continues on to the 2nd of January with the Tweede Nuwe Jaar Carnival.
This roots from the first slaves in Cape Town, who where only given one day off per year, January 2nd, so they had their own new year celebrations on this day.
The Cape Minstrel Carnival, or Coon Carnival, on the 2nd of January has become an experience not to be missed in Cape Town with the colourful and entertaining Minstrel street parade starting in District Six and ending in Green Point.
