“I am delighted that this prestigious event was named in my honour by South Africa’s ambassador of golf, Gary Player. It was also gratifying for me to learn that this tournament, which started out as a conversation between Gary and myself during a luncheon some years ago, was not just idle chatter between two senior citizens!”
These now immortal words of Nelson Mandela epitomise much of what this tournament is all about: two of South Africa’s icons have come together to make a difference in the lives of South African children, using golf as the vehicle and having fun while doing it.
Hosted once more by South Africa's sportsman of the century, Gary Player, the tournament features golf stars from champions and regular ours, as well as top business people and stars from the world of entertainment.
After a slow start the format quickly caught on and now the professionals, businessmen and celebrities flock to this unique golf event to compete together in teams while knowing that two most noteworthy causes are benefiting: the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund and the Gary Player Foundation.
While the event will always attract both star-struck fans - luminaries such as Nigel Mansell, Gary Lineker, Kenny Dalglish, Patrick Duffy, Samuel L Jackson and Jodie Kidd have already displayed their golfing prowess - and die-hard golf fans, who can savour the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Retief Goosen, Bob Charles, Lee Westwood and a host of other world-beaters, the Nelson Mandela Invitational is about so much more than a golf tournament.
It is about the serious commitment to the upliftment of the youth of South Africa. The golf is really just there to have fun doing it. What could be more real than that?
