True to form, Café Extrablatt, the German chain with the motto that means “that certain something more” (“Das Gewisse Extra” in German), is bolstering their Monday to Friday offering with a low-key, loungy after-work party every Wednesday.
The shakedown starts up at 5pm, when the Green Point restaurant cuts the price of its cocktails in half, and then from 7pm, hip hop and house DJs get the upstairs smoking section of the eatery grooving with ambient tunes and soulful background noise.
In the way of extra entertainment, trained sushi chefs showcase their slicing and dicing skills, and after the live demonstrations, patrons are invited to order any of the sushi platters rolled out.
Housed in the Exhibition Building across from the Cape Town Stadium, the restaurant is an obvious stopover prior to big concerts or post football matches, but its easy, informal atmosphere and its nearly ‘round-the-clock service (the kitchen is open until midnight) also lend themselves to anything from a quick caffeine fix to a late night meal.
The downstairs brasserie-style seating of the eatery is reminiscent of a Parisian cappuccino bar, and thus makes for an ideal spot to grab a coffee, indulge in a weekend brunch buffet or enjoy a piece of cake and a cup of tea.
While the oversized bucket seats, the cosy fireplace and the flat-screen televisions found upstairs are better suited to bar flies looking to unwind with an ice-cold pint of Pilsner Urquell – that’s right, Café Extrablatt stocks the esteemed European brew – or a brightly coloured cocktail.
So, even if you can’t help yourself hurdle the midweek hump with a chilled-out evening at the shakedown, there are plenty of reasons to frequent the establishment otherwise – especially if you’re a German football fan (the eatery broadcasts all of the Deutschland games on their four flat-screen televisions).
