Record-breaking comedic play finally comes to Cape Town

Line, the longest-running play in New York - no easy feat, mind you – is finally set to grace the stages of South Africa. From Wednesday 18 to Saturday 28 April, the Little Theatre on Orange Street will host the one-act comedy that out-Broadwayed some of Manhattan’s most popular performances.

This over 40-year-old production has been translated into 25 languages, staged worldwide, and centres on a group of people waiting in a long queue, all doing their best to get ahead – though, it seems none of them know what they are waiting for. What follows is an absurdist take on society and human behaviour. 

The cast includes Bjorn Steinbach, Leon Clingman, and Marlisa Doubell; along with the acclaimed Yvonne Copley as director. This great satirical piece is given vitality through its host of interesting characters, from Stephen, the aspiring intellectual, to Molly, who’s not afraid to show some skin to get ahead. 

Successfully maintaining audiences for four decades, Line is a staple feature in the world of theatre, and to put it bluntly, any piece of theatre with a life-span as long as this one is sure to offer plenty of laughs and insightful social commentary.

Times: The show at the Little Theatre starts at 8.15pm | Saturdays have two shows one at 3:15pm and another 8.15pm.
