Diving with Great White sharks is one of the most exhilarating experiences you could ever undertake.
And there’s no better place to do so than at Gansbaai in South Africa’s Western Cape, where the Great White Shark Festival is set to happen in October 2008.
Why have a Great White Shark Festival? The organizers hope to promote awareness of, education about and protection of this remarkable species that is hunted for its fins and haunted by its Jaws image.
Other aims of the Great White Shark Festival are to generate employment for the local community, attract international scientists and shark enthusiasts and encourage research to the benefit of the shark and the shark viewing industry.
In recent decades, sharks have become a persecuted and threatened species and man has endangered this magnificent creature's existence.
Today, through conservation and education, this misaligned image is changing.
Going on a boat trip to go shark cage diving to see the Great White sharks in their natural habitat is one of the things you can do at the festival.
The boats will depart from Kleinbaai, next to Gansbaai, the closest harbour to the best places to see and dive with the Great Whites.
