GIPCA Drawing Pleasure Workshop Series

Put pencil to paper and let the pros help unleash your sketching skills

The University of Cape Town’s Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA) is giving aspiring artists a unique opportunity to attend drawing workshops at Hiddingh Campus in June and July.

There are two different workshops available that cover basic and essential aspects of sketching, and participants can register for one or both, depending on what they would like to learn. Ideal for anyone who is looking to discover their untapped talent or just trying to develop their skills, the classes are lead by seasoned professionals Karen Stewart and Leonard Shapiro and take place over two consecutive nights each.

The workshops and facilitators are as follows:

  • Workshop 1
Karen Stewart will introduce participants to the ‘art of seeing’ and will be showing learners how to connect the idea of perception to the physical act of drawing. Participants will be taught different mark-making techniques and how to ‘look’ in new ways, and the slow-paced classes will allow students to completely immerse themselves in the subject matter. Karen has a Masters Degree in Illustration and 12 years of creative process facilitation under her belt.
    Dates: Monday, 23 – Tuesday, 24 June 2014 & Monday, 30 June – Tuesday, 1 July 2014
  • Workshop 2
For the ‘observational drawing’ workshop, Leonard Shapiro will guide participants in ways of understanding the structure of an object and then putting that to paper. The focus will be on simple, yet extremely successful techniques to reveal more of the object as well as on a few creative exercises that are part of the drawing process. This workshop is especially great for beginners, but those with previous experience will also benefit from the class. Leonard is a graduate of the Michaelis School of Fine Art at UCT and is the founder of Lateral Leap, a company that facilitates drawing workshops for people in corporate environments.
    Dates: Wednesday, 25 – Thursday, 26 June 2014 & Wednesday, 2 – Thursday, 3 July 2014
