Galbi, Cape Town’s first and only Korean barbeque restaurant, has made their unique selection of offerings even more enticing: On Wednesdays only, the passionate folk at this concept eatery are offering a complimentary dessert to any customer that books for a meal worth R50 or more. With a diverse array of tasty, novel options on the menu, this special deal surely makes for a good excuse to mark off the midweek as Asian braai and banter time.
Opened just off Long Street in April 2011 on founder Coenraad Groenewald’s return from a three and a half year stint in South Korea, the cosy, off-beat city centre spot effectively infuses a traditional Korean practice – the social act of visiting galbi houses for a do-it-yourself barbeque – with local flair and flavours. Quite unlike any other eatery in the Mother City, Galbi invites customers to take a central, interactive role in food preparation by cooking their own fare over smouldering grills – all of authentic Korean origin – that are built into the middle of each of the restaurant’s wooden tables.
Raw marinated meat is, of course, a mainstay on the menu, with options ranging from foreign favourites like Daegi Galbi (delicious pork belly strips) to South African staples such as ostrich, warthog, kudu, beef fillet and lamb sosaties, but vegetable skewers are available too. All 100g main portions are meant to be enjoyed with a scattered array of side dishes of both east and west origin – think sweet potato chips, grilled zucchini, garlic mash, cos lettuce wraps and kimchi, a spicy Korean cabbage dish – and a choice from the impressive collection of local craft beer and wine, traditional rice-based wine or fruity novel cocktails on offer.
As in the country that inspired the concept, the focus here – supported by the eatery’s open layout – is on fun, relaxed social interaction with customers sharing the selection of offerings rather than indulging in individual plates. Now, with free wine in the mix on Wednesdays, the atmosphere is set to be even more jovial, the experience even more enjoyable.
So, to cash in on this weekly special, which applies to any meal combination off the menu over R50, be sure to phone and book beforehand (walk-ins do not qualify), and don’t forget to mention CapeTownMagazine.com – the special is offered exclusively to our readers.
