Each summer, a riveting Shakespearean production can be seen at the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre in Wynberg, Cape Town. Commencing on 29 January 1956 with a production of The Taming of the Shrew, this open-air theatre in Wynberg plays annual host to Shakesperean productions. Inspired by London's Regent Park, Shakespeare is performed here every summer, generally with a local twist to add to the entertainment.
The theatre was created in the grounds of the historic villa fashioned by three generations of the Maynard family, which was eventually sold to Cape Town City Council when the actual homestead was demolished in 1954.
On warm summer evenings many theatre-goers begin the evening by picnicking in the park before the show begins.
