Bomba Estereo at Assembly

This fiery jam features hot electro from local and international acts

Things are set to get downright tropical when Columbian psychedelic electro group Bomba Estereo take to the stage at Assembly on Friday, 31 May 2013 for Fire Ball, a mini-festival that’s part of the newly formed Southern African Firefest Route. With a name that translates to “a really cool, bad ass party”, the spicy, Latino four-piece is sure to shake the funked-up, jivey District Six jol to a supersonic start.

Brought to you by Black Major (an artist management company which represents the likes of Spoek Mathambo and Zaki Ibrahim) and event management team Beanstalk, the hot and happening dance shindig also features Mexican group Sonidero Mandril, American/Congolese duo Kongo Elektro and Cape Town festival regular Toby2Shoes on the main stage. The Afro Clap Stage will be dishing out a heavy dose of local electronica, with beat masters Funafuji, JakobSnake and others taking turns reigning over the decks.

The idea for the Firefest Route, a circuit of events featuring regional and international acts in the Southern African countries of Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Swaziland and Réunion Island, was born from the success of the annual Swaziland MTN Bushfire Festival of the Arts, which attracts musicians, artists and culture aficionados from all over the globe. To co-ordinate what is believed to be the first collaborative collection of festivals on the continent , a committee known as the African Music Festival Network was formed.  By bringing high-profile overseas acts like Bombeo Estereo, who have graced stages at major festivals like Coachella, Bonnaroo and SXSW, the African Festival Network hopes to promote regional and international artistic cultural exchange as well as the Southern African tourist industry. Not only is this strong network of festivals good for each individual event’s economical survival, it’s proving that Africa is becoming a real force to be reckoned with on the world music stage.
