Ethereal, enigmatic and beautiful, Kate Davies’ infrared photography is a symphony of subtlety, with a fairytale quality that invites the viewer to embark on a journey with her. This exhibition is the result of a year-long project during which she committed to take one picture every day for 365 days. The show will be on at Side Street Studios in Woodstock from Thursday, 28 January until Thursday, 4 February 2016.
The other-worldly quality of infrared comes at a cost – the fact that the artist cannot see anything through the viewfinder whilst shooting so has to wait for development to see what she has captured. This only adds to the mystical value of the photographs, which Davies frames with a circular crop, necessitating meticulous mindfulness when composing the shot. The result is “a thoughtful procession of images of a year going round in circles” – circles in a greater circle.
Infrared photography is unique in that an infrared-sensitive film or image sensor is used, and an infrared-passing filter blocks out visible light and only allows infrared light to pass through to the camera. By combining these features, the photographer achieves a range of special in-camera effects, such as false colour, dark skies, milky skin and atmospheric haze, which create a dreamlike image.
