The leafy village of Paarl in the Cape Winelands, is situated only 50 km north-east of Cape Town and was established in 1687, after the surrounding farm land was given to Dutch settlers.

The settlers soon found out that, due to the fertile ground and the Mediterranean climate, the area was perfect for grapes.

And so Paarl, which gets its name from a massive granite rock landmark that appears to shine like a pearl when the sun strikes it at a certain angle, became one of the finest wine regions in South Africa and beyond.

One of the main historic landmarks in Paarl is the Afrikaans Language Monument, which symbolizes the development of Afrikaans into a language of its own.

The monument is built on a hill and boasts an incredible panoramic view over the Paarl Winelands and surrounding areas. On clear days, one can even see Table Mountain over 50km in the distance.
