Cape Town Township Langa, meaning "Sun", was named after Langalibalele, a traditional leader of the Hlubi group who was taken to Robben Island in 1875 for resisting the local government in Natal.

It is one of South Africa's oldest townships, created in the 1920's. When a Spanish flu epidemic hit the city of Cape Town in 1918, black South-Africans were identified as a health hazard.

They were relocated to the area we now know as Langa Township. Later Langa Township served as housing for male workers from the Transkei and Ciskei homelands.

Langa, situated 15 - 20km from Cape Town, has a sports stadium, six parks, three public baths and a swimming pool. In Washington Street you find the Tsoga Environmental Resource Centre, which facilitates youth programmes, life skills training and environmental information. There are a number of social programs in Langa, including the Guga's Thebe Arts & Culture Centre.
