Rondebosch is one of the oldest residential areas in Cape Town. Back in 1657, the first Dutch families - they arrived to produce and supply food for the Dutch East India Company - were given land along the Liesbeeck River in Rondebosch.

Today, Rondebosch is a green suburb with many old and beautiful buildings, including those of the University of Cape Town (UCT). They were designed by Sir Herbert Baker, the creator of Rhodes Memorial, built in 1912 on the slopes of Devil's Peak.

UCT is famous for its medical faculty, thanks to the work of professor Chris Barnard who on December 3 1967 conducted the first heart transplant.
