Observatory, or by the Capetonians referred to as 'Obs', was named after the observatory (which is unfortunately, only open once a week to visitors).

This young, vibrant and bohemian suburb is situated east of the city centre, and is one of Cape Town's happening suburbs for sides walk cafes, local bars, good and health food restaurants and live music.

'Obs' also harbours the world famous Groote Schuur Hospital. It was here where doctor Chris Barnard conducted the first heart transplant on December 3 1967.

Nowadays Observatory is more known for its Lower Main Road, a multicultural gathering of sidewalk cafes like Obs Cafe, a Touch of Madness, Stones pool bar, Roots, the new and hip Barmooda, Bohemiene Cafe Ganesh and Diva's.

For the more upmarket visitor the beautiful driving Range at the River Club is a good alternative offering a great breakfast and practising your tee-off.
