What is characteristic for this traditional Muslim suburb are the cobbled streets, brightly colored houses, Muslim saint shrines ("kramats"), mosques and exotic spice shops.

The majority of the 6 000 residents of the Bo Kaap or "Malay Quarters" are Muslim, and descend from slaves who were brought here from India, Sri Lanka, and elsewhere in Asia by the Dutch. Until today, this particular population is referred to as Cape Malay, which is incorrect as most of Bo Kaap's residents are not entirely, or not at all, of Malaysian descent.

Each year on the 2nd of January the Bo Kaap celebrates a big street party, formerly known as the "Coon Carnival" in the centre of town: The Second New Year.
