Stellenbosch
Wine estate mecca - Stellenbosch - was founded over 300 years ago by the Dutch East India Company and is the second oldest town in South Africa

Originally named Wildenbosch, Stellenbosch was founded over 300 years ago - as the first settlement beyond the Cape colony - and was named after the Cape's first governor, Simon van de Stel.

Stellenbosch started out as a farming community, supplying the Dutch East India Company with fresh fruit and vegetables. Due to the hundreds of oak trees planted by van Der Stel, Stellenbosch has been nicknamed Eikestad (Oak Town).

Today, apart from its wine industry, ‘Eikestad' is known for being one of South Africa's most important university towns.

Stellenbosch harbours many historical buildings. The beautiful Cape Dutch Architecture in historic Dorp Street will take you back centuries. The VOC Kruithuis (1777), a white washed solid construction, was erected as the company's arsenal storage. With walls are over 50 cm thick, the Kruithuis is the only existing arsenal of its kind.

Some of the best wine estates in South Africa surround Stellenbosch. A visit to some of these estates should be on everyone's list of things to do in the Winelands.

Molo says:
