The suburbs on the South(east) slopes of Table Mountain are generally known as the Southern Suburbs.

The leafy green southern suburbs - the oldest of the City's established areas in the past were more 'English', whereas the Northern Suburbs were more 'Dutch'.

The southern suburbs are home of the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and the University of Cape Town (UCT), which makes that lifestyle in for instance Rosebank, Rondebosch, Mowbray and Observatory is dominated by students and intellectuals.

Here one can live and dine for little money. On the other hand, Newlands, Constantia, Bishopscourt and Kenilworth are more affluent, with grand mansions and breathtaking homes surrounded by beautiful gardens owned by Cape Town's most noble families.
