One of the most lucrative industries in South Africa is without a doubt the wine industry. 

Excluding tourism, in 2003 this industry created a total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) value of R16,3 billion (±2 billion euro) or 1,5 percent of the total GDP of South Africa. Approximately 75% of this figure (1,4 billion euros) comes from the Western Cape.

Added to that, wine tourism has proven to be very lucrative as well. is According to studies released by the South African Wine and Information Systems, the total turnover of wine tourism in the Western Cape in 2003 amounted R4,2 billion (± 500 million euro).
