Cape Town Tourism is urging all Capetonians to Live It! Love It! LOUDER! in the months leading up to the 2010 World Cup. The City is preparing its stadium and systems with two test events at the new Cape Town stadium this January. The first in event – a football match between Ajax and Santos – took place on 23 January 2010. Three days ahead of the big game all 20 000 tickets were sold out. Ticket prices were capped at R30–50 to afford many Capetonians the opportunity of experiencing this historic opportunity. Cape Town Tourism was pleased to see our enthusiasm for the inaugural event. The second test event will see the stadium welcome rugby to the stadium. Local soccer teams Ajax Cape Town and Engen Santos kicked the first ball in the - nearly fully finished - R4.5 billion Cape Town Stadium. A great addition to the city. Everyone came out this weekend to welcome fans to the Cape Town Stadium that was purpose-built for the 2010 World Cup. Mayor Dan Plato, Western Cape Premier Helen Zille, Morne du Plessis, a rabbi and a priest - the last two to bless the stadium. The crowd cheered and chanted. Freshly Ground performed a couple of their most famous songs. Although they sang on the far side of the field, the crowd loved them just as well.
