As the FIFA World Cup Soccer 2010 is approaching quickly, CapeTownMagazine.com wants to introduce you to Bafana Bafana, South Africa's national soccer team.

Despite Bafana Bafana accomplishments are not what they used to be, the team was for instance not participating in the World Cup soccer 2006 in Germany, we have faith that the boys will surprise us when we least expect it. South Africa has surprised the world before when it came to sports.

Take the World Cup Rugby 1995 for instance. It was for the first time South Africa was allowed to participate in this major sports event after almost three year long sports boycott. Against all expectation, South Africa, hosting the event for the very first time, won the World Cup Rugby.

Maybe that Bafana Bafana, meaning ' the boys', will surprise us like the Springboks did in 1995. Like rugby, South African soccer was also subjected to the sports boycott. It was only in 1992, two years before apartheid was abolished, when the South Africa Football Association (SAFA) was welcomed back into the International Soccer Association FIFA.

In the years to follow, South Africa accomplished quite a lot when it comes to soccer. In 1997 South Africa was the first country to qualify itself for the world cup soccer. In 1998 South Africa became second in the African Cup of Nations and in 2002 Bafana Bafana made it to the World Cup Soccer in Japan and Korea.

How Bafana Bafana will perform during the World Cup Soccer 2010 is still unknown, but our hopes are high. We will keep you informed on all developments on South Africa's national soccer team. Bafana Bafana is in the race to qualkify for the African Cup of Nations in 2008.
