Twenty thousand unsung heroes of the World Cup stadia construction will each be allocated two tickets for matches played at the stadium they are building.

“I have good news for the workers, what we have decided with the Local Organising Committee (together). We will offer about 20 000 workers two free tickets each for the stadium where they are working,” said FIFA President Sepp Blatter during his visit to South Africa in September 2008.

The gesture, according to Blatter, is a token of appreciation from Fifa and the LOC to all stadium workers.

“This is something we have decided to do and I think it is a merit to the workers and it is in recognition of all those who are helping to bring this World Cup to a success,” Blatter added.

The Fifa president said he was delighted to have met workers in Cape Town and in Johannesburg during his four-day visit in South Africa.

“The importance of the workers is to realise that this world cup is tremendous. I told them they are important and that they are building a legacy not only for South Africa but for the whole African continent,” he said.

The 2010 Fifa Football World Cup will be played out in 10 newly built or upgraded stadiums, in nine South African cities.

Five are existing stadiums, which are being upgraded, and the remaining five are being built from scratch. All construction work is scheduled for completion by October 2009.
