Team Green Point – made up of construction workers from the new Green Point Stadium – have shown that they not only have what it takes to build a legendary soccer stadium, but also know a thing or two about how the beautiful game should be played!
A total of 41 teams, made up of workers from all the 2010 World Cup stadiums, traveled to the University of Witwaterstrand in Johannesburg for a one-day tournament organised by construction company WBHO.
After playing no fewer than nine games, it was Team Green Point who emerged victorious and with a glimmering trophy to call their own. The tournament was the first time that the team had opportunity to wear their new Team Green Point soccer jerseys.
The team gathered with construction site managers this week at the Green Point Stadium Visitor Centre to celebrate with each other and show off their trophy.
“You had a goal, you had a vision, and you achieved them. That’s what life is all about,” said Andrew Fanton, project director of the new Green Point Stadium.
“It was a tough tournament, but we played well and came away as winners. We’ve made history! We have to defend the trophy again next year so that it’s still ours when the World Cup begins,” said an upbeat Babalo Mfundisi, captain of Team Green Point.
Apart from winning the trophy again next year, another of Team Green Point’s goals is to play at the new Green Point Stadium for the hand-over of the stadium to the City of Cape Town in December 2009.
Molo Says: “Well done to Team Green Point! The new stadium is taking shape impressively, and you can see the progress by signing up for an informative and insightful Green Point Stadium tour, which we at CapeTownMagazine.com can personally recommend.”
