City of Cape Town Has Handed Over 3 000 Houses in Past Year
During the past financial year, the City of Cape Town has handed over 3 000 houses to beneficiaries throughout the Cape Metropole
The various units form part of a total of 66 housing projects managed by Council's Directorate of Integrated Human Settlements, and financed in terms of the national housing subsidy programme.

In a progress report presented to the City's Housing Portfolio Committee, the Directorate provided statistics of units built as part of Council projects or as part of Peoples Housing Project (PHP) initiatives.

The best progress was recorded at the Kuyasa Town 3 in Khayelitsha with 1 014 PHP houses under construction.

At Mfuleni, 506 houses have been handed over to flood relief victims. In Langa, Gugulethu and Nyanga, 287 hostel units have been converted.

The 3 000 plot housing scheme being developed in Strand by Asla is nearing completion, and the Netreg Housing Project of 190 units is now complete.

At Witsand, services for the 400-unit housing project are complete and top structures are progressing. During the past few months, 27 houses have been handed over to beneficiaries. This is a showcase project promoting poverty alleviation through energy efficient housing.

At Browns Farm, 15 PHP houses were handed over since December 2006, bringing it to a total of 379 to date.

At Mamre the 55 unit project is nearing completion and 12 houses were handed over in January.

At Wallacedene, the services for the 600 houses in Phase One are complete and top structures under construction by various PHP groups. Ten were handed over in December. In Phase Two, 28 houses have been handed over since December.

"A new structure plan is being prepared for the Pelican Park development of 3 300 units, consisting of a mix of ‘gap' housing with potential for cross-subsidisation of RDP houses," says Cllr Dan Plato, Mayoral Committee Member for Housing.
