During a press conference earlier that day, Mama Africa had stated that with the end of her Grand Finale Tour at the Cape Town Jazz Festival she was definitely putting an end to her musical career. "I am 74, have been in the busniness for 50 years and I want to slow down. My body is tired", she explained.

Over half an hour before Makeba appeared on stage for her last show, the Cape Town Jazz Festival's Kippies Stage was already filled up with fans. Young and old, and from all backgrounds and nationalities: Everybody at 'Africa's Grandest Gathering' wanted to be a witness of Makeba's last concert.

The tension went straight through the roof
when Mama Africa, together with her band appeared on stage for a one- hour show.

For more than an hour, Miriam Makeba (74)
together with her band kept entertained the thousands of people who had flocked to Kippies main stage. They had left the other stages of the Cape Town International Convention Centre relatively abandonned.

When the clock struck 10pm, it was time for Mama Africa
and her fans to say goodbye; for many amongst the crowd an emotional moment. To keep Makeba's last concert alive, CapeTownMagazine.com made a series of photographs. For you to remember this special evening.
