Women’s Day celebrates our women in South Africa as this day commemorates 9 August 1956 when women participating in a national march petitioned against pass laws. This was legislation that required African persons to carry a document on them to ‘prove’ that they were allowed to enter a ‘white area’.
In politics and the struggle think of the “Mother of Mothers” Albertina Sisulu, Winnie Mandela and academia such as Mamphela Aletta Ramphele.
In the arts think of famous South African sculptor Jane Alexander and poet Ingrid Jonker.
In South African Music our famous female musicians Miriam Makeba, Sibongile Khumalo, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Nhlanhla Sibongile Mafu of Mafikizola, Simphiwe Dana, Karen Zoid and the late and much loved Brenda Fassie.
On stage and screen, think famous South African Actresses; Oscar winner Charlize Theron, Tetty Pheto (Tsotsi) and off course a honorary mention for the incredible Evita Bezuidenhout.
In business think of South African women in business Maria Ramos, Wendy Luhabe and Nolitha Fakude for example.
All these examples of many are strong beautiful South African role models for us all. We salute you.
Spend a Night with South African Women on Women’s Day;
