South African Band Freshlyground Wins MTV Award
South African band Freshlyground has just walked off with the award for 'Best African Act' at the MTV Music Awards

Darlings of the SA music scene, Freshlyground, has won the MTV European Music Award for "Best African Act".

The band - who was up against Nigeria's P-Square, Tanzania'a Juma Nature, Kenya's Nameless and Angola's Anselmo Ralph - walked off with the award at the MTV European Music Awards ceremony in Copenhagen last night. This is the first time a South African act has won this coveted international award.

South African Band Freshlyground nominated for MTV Award

Freshlyground has swept up a storm in the South African music world and are making inroads into the international music scene.

Now their growing popularity has been recognised with their nomination as the best African musicians in the MTV European Music Awards for 2006.

This energetic and charismatic
seven piece ensemble was formed in 2002 and have released two albums. Their second album, Nomvula, reached gold status and the radio hit single 'Doo Be Doo' quickly became a great favourite on SA radio. Popular demand also led to its being made available as a ring tone. Famed for their vibey live shows, Freshlyground's funky Afro-jazz sound has been described as exemplifying the joys of the new South Africa.

This multi-cultural band
has diverse roots in South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Their unique sound is fresh and original, blending a wide range of influences from indigenous African kwela, through jazz, classical and contemporary urban music.

This year's award ceremony will
take place in Copenhagen, Denmark on 2 November.
