Kapama Nature Reserve Climate and Weather
Summer
Intense heat in the daytime and thunderstorms in the afternoon are experienced. Vegetation is dense and lush because the summer rains and newborn animals fill the bush. Summer is the best time for bird-watching.
Autumn
At the end of the summer rain period all the water holes are full. Temperatures begin to drop at night and a colour change takes place in the vegetation.
Winter
Daytime temperatures are pleasant and nights are chilly. Visibility in the bush is very good, making winter an excellent time for Big Five Game viewing.
Spring
The dull bush changes to a lively green vegetation at the start of the rainy season. Temperature are pleasant.
Areas Of Interest - Pilgrims Rest
There never was a more beautiful or romantic spot to have a gold rush than Pilgrims Rest. Pilgrims Rest was founded in 1873. This town was born during the excitement of an alluvial gold rush, is a most perfect example and as such, the entire place has been declared a National Monument.
It really is well worth a visit and you can see yourself in the genuine atmosphere of the old days, by staying overnight in the village.
Areas Of Interest - Bourke's Luck Potholes
The Blyde has a spectacular course. From
its source on the Berg it flows to meet the Treur. At this meeting
point, near the site of a once profitable gold mine known as Bourke's
Luck after its owner, Tom Bourk, there are extraordinary potholes
and rock formations.
Paths and footbridges take visitors to viewing
sites overlooking these formations. The river then plunges headlong
into a gigantic gorge. The scenery is sensational, with the river
some 800 meters below the summit.
Areas Of Interest - Fairyland of Waterfalls
The Lowveld Escarpment is ribboned with streams and laced with waterfalls, the loveliest of them near the mountain villages of Sabie and Graskop. Many are accessable only to hikers. At Sabie's northern edge are the Lone Creek, Horseshoe and Brindal Veil cascades.
A little to the north, the twin columns of the famed Mac-Mac Falls drop straight down into the magical pool far below. Near Graskop are Lisbon, Berlin and the New Chum Falls, which are easily reached by one of the area's several hiking trails.
Areas Of Interest - Kruger National Park
The Kruger National Park will always be regarded as the prototype of wildlife sanctuaries in Africa. Comparisons with other reserves are inevitable, and some reserves will be acclaimed as better, bigger, wilder, more varied in their animal population and more luxurious, but the Kruger National Park sets a formidable standard.
Other parks may, indeed , have natural assets which the Kruger National Park lacks; but its scenery, plants and animals, as well as its singularly romantic history, will always ensure that it has a unique place among the world's game reserves.
