Happy Hour at Tommy’s Sports Bar
One hour a day for a week … sound good?
3Flavours Guest House, just outside Pringle Bay at the foot of the Hangklip Mountains, is a place where time seems to stand still – as still as the quiet night air that separates you from the millions of bright stars overhead.
Make sure you’ve got a few days to spare, because the chances are good that you’ll want to extend your stay here, which is something that many guests have done, say Dutch owners Anita and Derick Kenswil.
But what is it that makes 3Flavours, which opened in December 2008, so special?
Situated on an 8.5 hectare fynbos farm, this Pringle Bay guesthouse has a way of smoothing out your stresses from the minute you arrive and enjoy a welcome drink with the always-smiling Anita and Derick next to the large and inviting rim flow pool.
All the luxurious conveniences you would expect of a 4-star guest house are part of the 3Flavours experience, but you’ll never feel over-pampered. The rooms are extremely spacious, with earth coat floors and minimalist design, offering incredible views that make sleeping with the curtains open a great idea!
The homely communal dining room and lounge area (with stylish claypot fireoven) has a warm and contemporary African theme, and Anita is always on the lookout for new additions to enhance the African atmosphere, from paintings to masks to ostrich eggs.
The 8 rooms (4 Comfort, 2 Superior and 2 Family) are named after flowers found in the region (such as Erica, Protea and Brunia) and are elegantly and vividly appointed with warm colour schemes, extending the African theme of the guesthouse. Comfort rooms have well designed walk in showers, and Superiors feature a bowl-shaped bath with a view.
A Cloud-9 experience is as easily attainable as lying back on your bed and gazing out at the view towards Betty’s Bay.
Once you’ve settled in and had a rest, it’s time to explore the area – and what an area this is! The Pringle Bay stretch of coastline forms part of South Africa’s first UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
The area boasts a glorious abundance of wildlife, and is renowned for its birds and fynbos. Interestingly, there are more plant species per square metre here than anywhere else on the planet!
In this natural playground, there is an endless array of things to do. Whale watching, hiking, sandboarding, swimming, fishing, surfing, and cycling are all on offer. The Harold Porter Gardens, Kogelberg Reserve and Palmiet River are all close by and well worth a visit.
If you need a guide to take you along the most scenic trails you could ever imagine, 3flavours will put you in touch with Arend, who has lived in the area for 25 years – he knows his stuff!
Traditional African meals can be prepared on request, and not a week goes by at 3Flavours without at least one proper South African braai outside on the stoep! There are also a number of renowned restaurants just down the road in Pringle Bay.
Listen appreciatively to the perfect silence that punctuates your conversation, sit back and admire the mountain ahead of you, breathe in the unspoilt rejuvenating air and forget about time – this is the 3Flavours experience.
