Grand Daddy Launches Rooftop Cinema

Long Street's The Grand Daddy introduces the 35-seater Pink Flamingo Cinema

A nostalgic trip into the old world of cinema as an occasion, The Grand Daddy’s Pink Flamingo Cinema officially opened to the public on 22 October 2009. Celebrating the silver screen in a silver setting – right beneath the night sky - the cinema is set in the middle of seven vintage Airstream trailers, reinvented as hotel rooms by local artists. The cinema is heated in winter and cooled in summer, making it an experience to enjoy all year round.

The 35-seater cinema, showcasing contemporary classics, will screen films twice a week on Sunday and Thursday nights at 19:30, with an intermission during each screening.

All forthcoming movies are listed on the website, easing the booking process. Included in the R50 ticket price, each guest receives a cone of sweets, a welcome drink and a choice between an Eskimo Pie, candy floss or popcorn. A greater splurge of R200 will secure a comfortable front row couch, for up to three people, with all the goodies above and a selection of cold drinks in a private cooler box.

The Airstream Penthouse Trailer Park’s sky-bar serves drinks before and after the show.

The concept originated when owner Jody Aufrichtig and creative director, Robin Sprong met on the rooftop for a few drinks one late afternoon and found themselves staring at the blank wall of the fire escape.

‘We always try to incorporate creativity in all our projects, making sure that as many as possible enjoy the results. I knew that we needed to do something amazing with the space; and what better way to enjoy it than with a classic film, a few cold drinks, popcorn, Eskimo Pies and candy floss, all set beneath the night sky’, says Aufrichtig. The project was realised with sponsorship from Jamesons.
