Cape Town Parking Tariffs Hike

Increase in Prices for Parking in Cape Town's City Centre and surrounds

Cape Town is starting to see
the effects of becoming a metropolitan city, and now the parking prices are part of the growth process as well.

6 years ago parking in the inner city was still free, before Capetonians started paying R5.80 per hour. The City of Cape Town has approved an increase in parking tariffs in the inner city to go to R8.20 from 1 July.

The question is whether – with the current economic recession – the increase could not have waited for some months. In times of economic downfall one would think the last thing business needed is the city of Cape Town raising its parking tariffs.

According to the City of Cape Town the tariff increase is intended to ease parking monopolisation in and around Cape Town.

“To ensure that the limited number of parking spaces available are not monopolised for lengthy periods, the new tariffs will be linked to a maximum parking period to ensure the constant availability of parking opportunities,” said a representative for the City of Cape Town.

The combination of the parking tariff together with a restricted time period should result in a turnover of parking bays with an estimated 85 percent of the parking bays being occupied, and 15 percent of bays being constantly available to motorists entering the area.

With normal Capetonians reluctant to pay already steep prices for parking, one should consider whether a price hike at this time was the right move to ensure more available parking spots.

One thing’s for sure, with parking prices on the rise, more people will be finding alternative ways to travel to avoid hefty parking tariffs.

Parking tariffs will increase in all areas from 01 July as follows:
