As 2010 is approaching quickly,we introduce you to Bafana Bafana, South Africa's national soccer team
As the FIFA World Cup Soccer 2010 is approaching quickly, CapeTownMagazine.com wants to introduce you to Bafana Bafana, South Africa's national soccer team.
Despite Bafana Bafana's accomplishments not being what they used to be, for instance the team did not participate in the 2006 Soccer World Cup in Germany, we have faith that the boys will surprise us when we least expect it. South Africa has surprised the world before when it came to sports.
Take the World Cup Rugby 1995 for instance. It was the first time South Africa was allowed to participate in this major sports event after an almost three year sports boycott.
Against all expectations, South Africa, hosting the event for the very first time, won the Rugby World Cup.
Five years after their return to international football
and just three years after their momentous victory at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations on home territory, Bafana Bafana will make their FIFA debut.
Hopes are high that Bafana Bafana, meaning ' the boys', will surprise us like the Springboks did in 1995. Like rugby, South African soccer was also subjected to the sports boycott.
It was only in 1992, two years before apartheid was abolished, when the South Africa Football Association (SAFA) was welcomed back into the International Soccer Association FIFA.
In the years to follow, South Africa accomplished
quite a lot when it comes to soccer. In 1997 South Africa was the first country to qualify for the world cup soccer. In 1998 South Africa became second in the African Cup of Nations and in 2002 Bafana Bafana made it to the World Cup Soccer in Japan and Korea.
How Bafana Bafana will perform during the 2010 World Cup is still unknown, but you can be sure the boys will not dissapoint as the hosts of the prestigious event. We will keep you informed on all developments on South Africa's national soccer team.
The boys are starting to find their feet again, after what seemed liked a never-ending slump, with a number of great performances. After a number of wins and near loses by Bafana hopes are high for their performance in 2010.
As the hosts of the World Cup, the nation is expecting them to put on a great show and we are sure they will deliver. The boys seem to be working hard to up their game and it's starting to show.
