Full moon night cycle through the bustling streets of Cape Town
Fountains Hotel and Suites
Sleep in Cape Town’s city centre
The Fountains Hotel is a no frills solution to the problem of finding and choosing accommodation in Cape Town. With its No. 1 St George’s Mall address and its option for self-catering apartments as well as fully-serviced rooms, the hotel is an affordable, comfortable jumping off point from which business and leisure travellers can explore the Mother City.
There are plenty of hotels in Cape Town, but what sets Fountains Hotel apart is its central location; set on a bustling pedestrian way in the city centre, life is made easy from here.
Step outside the hotel and wander down St George’s Mall to browse the shops, and then head to Green Market Square or Long Street for a bite to eat (there’s a fantastic lunchtime market on Thursdays at the other end of St George’s Mall which is well worth a visit). The Company Gardens and the South African National Gallery and Museum are all just a 15-minute walk away. Head in the other direction and you’ll reach the Cape Town International Convention Centre after just three minutes, this makes Fountains Hotel a great choice if you’re in town for a conference or event. The V&A Waterfront is also just a 15 minute walk away, plus the traditional train and bus station is just across the road and a MyCiti bus stop is only a hop, skip and a jump away.
Even amidst the push and pull of city life, though, Fountains Hotel remains a place to relax and rejuvenate.
Stepping into the foyer from the hustle and bustle of St George’s Mall into the quiet of the hotel is a welcome change. An eye-catching piece of Paul du Toit art called “The Sleeper” adds a splash of bright colour to the otherwise classically decorated foyer.
A small business centre consisting of a desk and two computers is available for guest use; vouchers of bandwidth are available for purchase, this allows guests to buy as much as they need for their stay without having to pay per hour of use. Pamphlets with all of Cape Town’s exciting activities are laid out at the concierge desk, where the helpful staff will help with local plans, as well as book flights, tours or activities on request.
The hotel also has a well-equipped gym with a lap pool which is open 24 hours a day. The large tinted windows that run across one of the walls look out onto the busy Hans Strijdom Avenue, so gym-goers can happily people watch as they work out.
Not to mention, the usual inner-city parking problem isn’t an issue, as for a small fee you can park in the underground parking at the hotel.
Sleep
Aside from 156 clean, comfortable full-serviced hotel rooms on floors three to six, the Fountains Hotel also boasts self-catering apartments on floors seven to eleven for people who want to combine the best of hotel life with that home-away-from-home feel.
Breakfast is served downstairs at the restaurant.
There are superior, twin and king rooms, as well as universal access rooms which are wheelchair friendly. Some of the bathrooms have a shower over the bath, but others don’t; so make a request when you book if you have a preference. What’s more, each room is equipped with DStv, for those in need of a relaxing night in.
The self-catering apartments on the upper floors are tastefully decorated, come complete with balconies, and are comfortable and well-equipped with enough space for you to make yourself at home. Starting with bachelor suites for one person and going up to three bedrooms, the apartments all have full kitchens, lounge areas and in some cases two bathrooms. All the hotel amenities are available to guests staying in the apartments; breakfast and dinner can be added on or self-catering guests can head down to the restaurant on nights when they don’t feel like cooking. The apartments offer all the perks of staying in the city without any of the hassle.
Eat
The restaurant, which is open to the public, opens out into a courtyard so guests can dine outside in warm weather next to the striking water feature. A buffet breakfast, lunch and supper is on offer with a separate menu for light meals served throughout the day. You can expect to find fresh fish, roasts, salads on the buffet table every day with at least 10 hot dishes and desserts. The restaurant regularly sources meals from Halaal-certified specialty stores. The wide variety of meals ensures that everyone will find something they like. A quick glance at the light, all-day menu reveals morsels like Thai style chicken wrap, a Saldhana mussel pot or a good, old steak and chips. Drinks are served next to the restaurant in the bar area, complete with couches on which you can sip your whisky.
Business
Fountains Hotel also offers an assortment of events and conferencing facilities, with two rooms inside the hotel and three in the adjacent building. From gala dinners for three hundred people to meetings for as few as three, Fountains Hotel has it all. The rooms and apartments can be used for smaller get-togethers, while the large conference rooms can be arranged in cinema-style or schoolroom seating, the flexibility of the venues, catering facilities and the wide range of options makes it an ideal place to hold an event.
