10 Top Fan Walk Hotspots in Cape Town

The 10 best spots to check out the Fan Mile from beginning to end

Feel how it is to walk through our great and safe city on the Fan Walk. Voted 9 out of 10 by the Cape Argus for safety, fun and entertainment – the Cape Town Fan Walk succeeds in every way possible, leading you through some of the best spots on the Cape Town Fan Walk new and old, building football anticipation all the way.

1-Exchange place at St. Georges Mall opposite the revamped station

The Exchange Place is THE place to start the fan walk because this is where everyone is arriving from the stations, the park and the drive area. Expect flaming vuvuzela's, flood lit buildings and jembe bands - as well as hundreds and thousands of crazy and excited fans coming out of the station or from the Park ‘n Ride spots!

2-Loop Street

Known for our streets of raucous clubs and bars, Loop is the next stop on the Fan Walk! With plenty of bars it also shows new developments and great part of the Fan Walk 3-Buitengracht Bridge.

3-Buitengracht Bridge

Watch the parade and gathering of fans cross Buitengracht from a perfect viewpoint and walk it yourself as well; There’s no better spot to marvel at the spirit of Cape Town’s fan walk, as the lit up night sky illuminates the fans, spectators, pedestrians, performers, musicians, stilt walkers, acrobats and dancers celebrating into St. Andrews Square.

4-St Andrew’s Square (corner Buitengracht & Somerset)

Ideal spot to see the fans come over Buitengracht Bridge and plenty of photographic opportunities with bands and quirky world cup art, new soccer sculptures and other artworks - The rainbow arch by Heath Nash frames the majestic Table Mountain from St Andrew’s Square, incredibly popular for family photographs.  A great place to meet some other supporters, or relax with friends or family and kids. Soccer is a family affair too after all, and St Andrew’s an ideal start to the celebrations.

5-Cubana

Certainly the most popular Cubana in Cape Town, there’s a reason the Greenpoint Cubana is such a popular venue; a wildly versatile mix of clientele, soccer fans and otherwise - they flock to Cubana’s in Somerset Road for an amazing atmosphere, Cuban food and  cocktails. You won’t be red carded for lingering and picking one of the many tables outside to watch the fans go past!

6-YOLO Bar on the second floor of the new Cape Quarter Extension

YOLO stands for ‘you only live once, and it’s with that phrase in mind that you can abandon your woes for a time and enjoy the escapism that the World Cup offers. A trendy crowd, the view from this bar found on the second floor of the new Cape Quarter extension wrap- around- balcony that overlooks the Fan Walk into the heart of Cape Town’s Greenpoint area;  from Buitengracht bridge all the way to the stadium - The ONLY way to fly.

7-Finger Action Bar at the ground floor of the new Cape Quarter Extension

A no holds bar - expect caps and raucous drinks, the same all night fun you’d get from Caprice, but closer to the action! The entrance is on the corner (right of the quick spar on street level). Easy does it now...

8-Cafe Sofia at the Victoria Junction Hotel

One of the Fan Walk’s P.A. System’s sites – which means live music or entertainment in South African style! Authentically African, and outstanding quality! Sofia’s tapas are of killer quality too, so get you fill and soothe those ears.

9-Doppio Zero / Buena Vista Social Cafe on Main Road at the Greenpoint traffic circle

Doppio offers cafe styled food in Cape Town; you HAVE to try the sandwiches, or even the pizza, enough taste to keep your World Cup energy up ad nauseum! And then there’s the Buena Vista Social Cafe, another great bar – superb for watching the soccer if you couldn’t get a ticket; no problem.

10-Vendor Strip on Main road from the Victoria Junction to the Greenpoint traffic circle

Colourful characters selling all manner of World Cup paraphernalia, Cape and international cuisine at the Bo-Kaap / Muizenberg style vendor strip. Your best spots for food on the go before the game, during the game or an hour after the game. From Boerewors pies to Vetkoek and Gatsby’s!
