10 Questions For: Kamini Pather

MasterChef SA winner, food-writer and host of the all-new food-travel show, Girl Eat World – Kamini Pather is making more than just great chow in the food industry

1. How would you describe what you do for a living?

Varied but also my dream. I host food-travel TV series, Girl Eat World, I write for various publications and, in the past (and hopefully foreseeable future), I have hosted radio. It’s the perfectly balanced media lifestyle.

2. What is your most vivid childhood memory?

My maternal gran and I are still really close. I remember sitting on her stoep eating oranges with my brother and cousin. She cut teeth into the segments of orange peel and we all had a laugh. She was the gran who started my love affair with food.

3. If you could invite any three people, dead or alive, for dinner, who would they be and why?

Julia Child – besides being a legend in the food world, I think she would be a hoot! Her sense of humour would be most welcome at my fantasy dinner party.
Matt Preston (MasterChef Australia judge) – I have met Matt on a few occasions and he is insanely knowledgeable about food in a way that really isn’t ponsie. He also has unquestionable taste in wine.
Victoria Beckham – I just want to see if that lady actually eats.

4. If you ever found yourself auditioning for a music reality TV show, what song would you sing and why?

Oh wow. I would use all three wishes to be able to sing. But if I had a moment of sheer insanity (probably fuelled by some A-grade Mezcal) I would sing ‘Eat It’ by Weird Al. LOL!!! I wonder what Randall Abrahams would say…

5. How would you complete this sentence? The South African cabinet should include a Minister of _____________________.

Foreign Food Chains – there are too many. We need to limit the florescent lighting in our lives!

6. What would you say is the biggest misconception about you?

That I’m uptight. I’m a jeans-and-sneakers kinda girl, but we all wear masks to further our career/make an impression/change peoples perceptions of ourselves.

7. What is your (honest) opinion of Cape Town?

Beautiful city. Best food in our country. I wish decision makers for corporate budgets lived there so that I could too.

8. What’s the greatest fear you’ve had to overcome to get to where you are today?

The fear of failure.  I was going to enter the first season of MasterChef SA and chickened out (thankfully). In that year, I started hosting radio and started cooking with more intent and presence. I gained so much power of myself in that year that I was able to look my fear in the face.

9. What’s the one thing you’d like to achieve before you die?

I want to have visited and tasted something from each country of the world. There are 196 countries and I have only visited 23. I certainly have my itinerary cut out and joyfully so!

10. Which well-known South African personality would you, without a doubt, be able to beat in a street fight and why?

Jeannie D. We’re about the same height and she seems feisty enough for a good girl fight, but she always wears heels (and rocks them) and the length of her hair makes me think that I could totally take her down. K.O! (Yes, I am hearing the Mortal Kombat sound track with the inaugural “Fight” at the beginning of each fight.)
