10 Questions For: Confidential SA

You’ll recognise these five faces from the popular reality television series SA’s Got Talent, where Brent, Herschel, Junaid, Niyaaz and Faeez were semi-finalists. Having met in high school, friendship wasn’t the only thing that blossomed between these talented Capetonians and their shared passion for music led to the formation of their band, Confidential SA.

1.  How would you describe what you do for a living?
Although majority of us are still students studying at a tertiary institution, our passion lies with music. We are not all from a singing background and this passion is something some of us grew into and have not let go of since. With singing there is no break. It’s a constant effort as there is always room for improvement. It’s also about being inspired by different music and artists. It’s all about growth and versatility.

2.  What is your most vivid childhood memory?
As a relatively young boy group there are many childhood music memories!  

Niyaaz: Making Randal Abrahams cry during his solo SA’s Got Talent audition as well as burping uncontrollably after hitting a high note singing Céline Dion’s, ‘Power of Love’.
Faeez: He remembers his father and elder brother singing at home and longing to join them.
Brent: Although starting out as a soprano singer, Brent now performs the base notes for Confidential SA and fondly remembers his days reaching the high notes.
Herschel: When he sang on stage for the first time after previously having stage fright.
Junaid: Singing in front of his class. This was the first time he had ever sang in front of anyone.

Our most vivid memory as a group was when we spent our high school break times jamming and singing our hearts out.

3.  If you could invite any three people, dead or alive, for dinner, who would they be and why?
The King of Pop, Michael Jackson. He is an all-time icon which every aspiring artist looks up to and many aspire to become.
Nelson Mandela. He fought for a cause he believed in and this has impacted the lives of all South Africans. He has given us the opportunity to do what we love openly and he formed a bridge for all races to aspire to be the best they can.
Lastly but most importantly, our parents. They have provided each of us with stability to grow into the people we are today.

4. If you ever found yourself auditioning for a music reality TV show, what song would you sing and why?
Having not released our first single yet, it would have to be ‘Dance With Me Tonight’ by Olly Murs. This was our audition song for SA’s Got Talent and we feel that it sets a happy, groovy tone for any audience young or old.

5.  How would you complete this sentence? The South African cabinet should include a Minister __________________.
Dedicated to the Prevention of Corruption.

With the high levels of corruption currently taking place within top levels of government all sectors are at risk of not performing to the expected level. There is plenty of talent in Cape Town and the lack of funds for artist development is preventing Cape Town and the rest of South Africa from discovering its full musical potential.

6.  What would you say is the biggest misconception about you?
Well, we feel that people don’t know how much we’ve put into Confidential SA and how much it actually means to us. We’re like brothers to one another and do everything together. This is what we’d love to do with our lives on a full time basis.

7.  What is your (honest) opinion of Cape Town?
Cape Town is the without a doubt one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Not only scenically but also because of the diversity of its people. There are many undiscovered talents hidden in this vibrant city. Cape Town is also privileged enough to be home to one of the New7Wonders of World - Table Mountain, which is where we would really love to perform and record one of our original songs.

8.  What's the greatest fear you've had to overcome to get where you are today?
Our biggest fear is that we may not be fully discovered for the talent we have.

9.   What's the one thing you'd like to achieve before you die?
We’d like to be the first South African/African artists to perform as the headline act at Madison Square Garden!

10.  Which well- known South African personality would you , without a doubt, be able to beat in a street fight and why?   
This is a really tough question. But, we’d opt for fellow South African boy band FOUR, for the simple fact that there are three of them and five of us.
