10 Things You Have to Know About the FIFA Final Draw

The first official event to launch South Africa’s hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup takes place in Cape Town on 4 December 2009 and the City of Cape Town is pulling out all the stops to demonstrate its readiness to welcome thousands of soccer fans and dignitaries.
Here are the 10 things you simply have know about the FIFA 2010 Final Draw:
1. FINAL DRAW - WHEN WHERE AND WHAT
The FIFA Final Draw, which will determine the match schedule for the 32 participating teams in next year’s soccer tournament, will be held at 19h00 on Friday, 4 December 2009 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). 2. 150 MILLION VIEWERS – 600 ACCREDITED MEDIA – 32 TEAMS – 1 SOCCER WORLD CUP
Approximately 600 accredited broadcasters and journalists – who would be bringing the event from Cape Town live into the homes of millions of people worldwide - are expected to attend this milestone event, which will be televised live to an estimated 150-million viewers across the globe.
3. SPOT THE CELEBRITIES
Among the 2000 guests anticipated, Cape Town will host the FIFA family, influential sporting, business and government personalities and a number of heads of state. These include South Africa’s Academy Award winner Charlize Theron, FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke, football star David Beckham and Bafana Bafana player Matthew Booth.
4. A RED CARPET AFFAIR
To welcome VIPs at the CTICC, the City of Cape Town will host a ‘Red Carpet’ event from 16h00 on Friday 4 December 2009. Read more about this star studded event in our event on the FIFA Final Draw.
5. WHEN THE SMOKE CLEARS
A post-draw event will be held on the evening of Friday 4 December 2009. Traditionally the event acts as the post-mortem of the Final Draw earlier that day. The event will provide a relaxed and stylish atmosphere, where guests will socialise and engage with each other, while also providing ‘match-making’ opportunities for teams to pursue base-camp discussions.
6. PARTY IT UP IN LONG STREET
Although the Final Draw ceremony will be closed to the public, the City has organised a one-day festival in Long Street where Capetonians can view the Final Draw on large TV screens.

7. DON’T GET STUCK IN TRAFFIC
Prior to and during the events, several roads will be temporarily closed to enable event organisers and various City and Provincial services to prepare and secure these venues:
Expect road closures in the City Centre from 09h00 on Monday 30 November 2009 to 05h00 on Monday 7 December 2009. For a more detailed account of which roads will be closed and when visit Cape Town Tourism .
8. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!
This year the city has planned for the Switching on of the festive lights to coincide with the Final Draw celebrations. The City of Cape Town has focused on a soccer theme for this year’s festive lights in the city centre.
Over 50 000 people are expected to gather in Adderley Street on Sunday, 29 November 2009, to witness the colourful extravaganza of light and sound when the lights are switched on by Executive Mayor Dan Plato at the Foreshore. 9. GOING FOR A SONG
The Grammy award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir, Beninoise singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo and one of South Africa's greatest music exports Johnny Clegg will provide a star-studded line-up for the Final Draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa in Cape Town on 4 December 2009.

10. WHAT TO EXPECT
The 2005 Final Draw in Germany attracted a cumulative television audience of 134.5 million and was shown live in 137 countries. So Cape Town can expect the world to be watching on the weekend of the Final Draw in Cape Town. This is our chance to put our best foot forward and show the world that Cape Town is a world class destination worth visiting again and again.
